CERTL Summer Mini-Fellowship in Research

High School students involved in research projects at Wake Forest University School of Medicine for 6 week mini-fellowship in Research funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fund.

Students are paired with a faculty mentor at the medical school and become an active member of the faculty member's research team
for 6 weeks each summer, 40 hours per week. Students learn the research process, the specifics of the mentor's on-going research project, affiliated laboratory procedures, and produce their own interpretation of the research through the development of an oral presentation and web page. This intensive experience exposes young adults to the range of careers in science, medicine, and biomedical engineering. It further gives them the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities which builds the confidence for success needed to pursue such a career interest. The mentoring relationship provides them with guidance, encouragement, and acknowledgement of their skills and capabilities -- all critical elements for supporting young people as they make life long career decisions.

Students prepare an oral presentation that represents the on-going research in their assigned laboratory and their part in the research project. The presentation includes the relevance of the research and its implications for society at large. Student presentations are delivered in a meeting format similar to a scientific conference.
