The 9-12 CERTL RESEARCH PROGRAM was established to increase interest in science and mathematics
research among high school students. The program provides hands-on research experience with distinguished faculty from Winston-Salem State University and Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Students will develop, design and conduct a science or mathematics research project with the guidance of a faculty mentor. Minority students are encouraged to apply.

GOAL OF THE PROGRAM
The collaborative effort of Winston-Salem State University, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System seeks to stimulate interest in mathematics and science-related research.

QUALIFICATIONS
Students must be:
• in the ninth, tenth, eleventh, or twelfth grade.
• in satisfactory academic standing.
• highly motivated to learn science and/or mathematics.

REQUIREMENTS
Complete and submit the application with the following:
• a current high school transcript.
• two letters of recommendation. These letters should come from a science teacher, mathematics teacher
and/or a guidance counselor.
• a personal essay which describes your interest in science and/or mathematics, career goals, motivation, and reasons for wanting to participate in the 9-12 CERTL Research Program.

Summer Enrichment Academy for 6-8 Graders - Application Deadline February 18, 2007

CERTL 6-8 Summer Enrichment Academy is a hands-on, interactive look at science and math geared towards middle school students from the Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County School System and Community. The Academy emphasizes problem-solving skills by using real-life situations. Students will attend daily Problem-Based Learning (PBL) activities to enhance their interests and abilities in science and mathematics. Students will work in teams and use resource materials and the PBL method to discover potential solutions to the problems presented in these cases.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE?
Enrollment is limited to 30 students who are currently in grades six through eight for the 2005/2006 school year. Females and minorities, including African-American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian-American and other underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

WHEN WILL THE ACADEMY TAKE PLACE?
CERTL 6-8 Summer Enrichment Academy will be held for two sessions. Session I will run from June 19th to June 30th, and Session II will run from July 10th to July 21st. The Academy will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each weekday. Students will be provided lunch and snacks daily, and there is no cost for attending the program.

WHERE WILL THE ACADEMY TAKE PLACE?
CERTL Academy is held at the Downtown Middle School, located at 280 South Liberty Street, Winston-Salem, NC, 27101. Parents are expected to provide transportation if their child is accepted.

HOW ARE STUDENTS SELECTED FOR THE ACADEMY?
Students will be selected for participation in the Academy based on the potential of the student to benefit from the program, the stated level of motivation in science and mathematics, and by letter of recommendation from his or her science or math teacher.

The K-5 CERTL PBL Camp is a hands-on, interactive, fun look at science and mathematics for kindergarten through fifth grade students from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System and Community. The camp emphasizes problem-solving skills by using everyday life situations.
