Problem Based Learning Institute : In DepthIn class
This outstanding cooperative effort for specialized education provided by the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in partnership with WS/FC Schools provides the foundation for teachers seeking to apply Problem Based Learning concepts in their classrooms. This week long summer workshop provides renewal credit and a daily stipend for attendees, and is available only to teachers in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. schedules and sign up

Measurement and Student Performance:
For with district, school, and team leaders - five days of professional development to increase the capacity of leaders to connect measurement data to improved teaching and improved student achievement. Leaders will learn processes and tools for facilitating the analysis of data and using the data to inform critical instructional decisions including the development of a district and/or school professional development plan and monitoring plan to measure the effectiveness of the professional development. schedules and sign up

Dynamic Classroom Assessment: In Depth
Dynamic Classroom Assessment (DCA) prepares your district’s staff developers to help teachers in grades K-12 accurately assess what students know and can do in mathematics. This understanding and a mastery of DCA techniques and strategies lead to instructional decisions that are aligned with students’ needs and allow for higher student performance. schedules and sign up

Developing Algebraic Thinking: In Depth
The course provides an opportunity for practicing teachers to increase the breadth and depth of their current content knowledge in mathematics. The main focus of this course, Developing Algebraic Thinking, is growth in the use of algebraic reasoning, including, but not limited to, patterns, proportional reasoning, use of multiple representations, and performing regressions. Participants will take part in discussions, individual and group activities, and computer work.

The course involves full-class meetings as well as independent work using advanced computer software. This course requires the use of a graphing calculator. (If you do not have a graphing calculator, one will be provided for you during the class sessions.)

Leadership for Mathematics Improvement (LMI): In Depth
The Leadership for Mathematics Improvement (LMI) process helps schools and districts plan, implement and monitor a comprehensive mathematics improvement plan. LMI provides customized support for developing a mathematics leadership team; examining the research and best practices in mathematics curriculum, instruction, assessment and professional development; creating a vision and shared beliefs about mathematics teaching and learning; and building the district's capacity to sustain a curriculum improvement effort. schedules and sign up

Using Data: In Depth
The Using Data program helps educational leaders learn to use data to improve classroom teaching and learning. It is based on the collaborative inquiry approach described in the highly regarded book, Using Data/ Getting Results: A Practical Guide for School Improvement in Mathematics and Science. The Using Data program provides training for individuals who will become data facilitators for districts or schools. Data facilitator training is 12 days and is scheduled over a 12 to 18 month period of time. schedules and sign up

Effective Middle School Science Teaching: In Depth
The Effective Middle School Science Teaching (EMSST) program is designed for new and crossover middle-level teachers, teachers who were not science majors, and veteran teachers needing to make progress toward the “highly qualified” requirement of NCLB. Topics include teaching with inquiry, classroom management, assessment, and literacy. Selected curriculum materials from federally-funded exemplary curriculum projects will be used as examples of best practice. If desired, participants can be assigned a faculty “e-mentor” for follow-up dialogue throughout the 2005-06 school year. Developing Leadership Skills: In Depth
Developing leadership skills in your staff can increase your school system’s ability to develop and implement plans, respond to changing conditions, reduce conflict, and produce results for students. Our leadership training, whether single or multi-day programs, is designed and delivered around the following research-based leadership development themes: feedback intensive programs, skill-based training, 360° feedback, and development assignments, developmental relationships, and hardships. schedules and sign up
